Alright, y'all - hold onto your wigs, it's Motown Night on American Idol! Here's my yammerings on the top ten, hopefully my review won't bore you... here come my comments before the judges do their things...
Matt Giraud: "Let's Get It On" - Stepping away from the piano without his precious Coldplay... He ruled the falsetto, and made a great showing.
Kris Allen: "How Sweet It Is" - The shirt police are calling... This song doesn't really do much for me or his voice. Hard to get whiter than James Taylor, but he's coming in a close second. Milquetoast except for the last note, which was Loudtoast.
Scott MacIntyre: "You Can't Hurry Love" - Seems to be the first one that Smokey lied about. I wonder if that's that's because he's... got a perm? In the end, his voice isn't strong enough - he doesn't support it enough, and so it sounds tinny to me. But it's nice to hear him play that piano - and did you know that he's blind?
Megan Joy: "For Once In My Life" - She's pushing... This could be her last week with this performance. It's like she's trying to outshout the band. I think this arrangement stinks.
Anoop Desai: "Ooh Baby Baby" - Harold and Kumar went to Motown, and Anoop sounds pretty good, but it's pretty boring for me. Wondering if the sweat on his upper lip was ever going to bead.
Michael Sarver: "Ain't To Proud To Beg" - He lacks the control or training to be able to flip from falsetto to chest that fast, but hey, he shore is friendly! It's ironic because as big as he is, he caps off in passion and kind of leaves it at a 7 of 10.
Lil' Rounds: "Heat Wave" - She looks hot! And she is belting without blinking. At some point I think she needs to at least look like she's making an effort - just to earn some style points. My only criticism really is that the arrangement just went so fast that she didn't have a chance to hold onto these notes that she's nailing.
Adam Lambert: "Tracks of My Tears" - You gotta say this tranny has one heckuva voice. It is the best I've ever hear Kurt Russell sound. This is a very strategic move, and it totally worked. Always leave them wanting more, don't even sing the last words girl. Seriously, he's the best female performer they've ever had.
Danny Gokey: "Get Ready" - Try following Adam, Danny. He's great, but he's totally Vegas tonight. The difference between Danny and Adam has been clearly defined tonight - Adam is an interpreter of music, and Danny is not. He's going to go far, but it's not because he can interpret.
Allison Iraheta: "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" - She's amazing. I'm glad she's getting a shot at closing a show. I still think this arrangmeent is over the top, but man does she have a marketable Joss Stone kinda voice. Left it all on the table. And can you believe that she's blind? I mean, sixteen?
Random Notes: If Kara says "who you are as an artist" one more time, I'm going to throw Scott's eyeballs at her. I'll give her a pass since it seems that she believes in God. Simon Cowell is my own personal hero for painting Paula's upper lip with crayon. I love live television.
So that's the story. Who's going home? I say it's yet another lady. Or Michael Sarver.
